Cape Verde & Trans Atlantic passage

Small Image

This a proper passage adventure across the deep blue ocean. A great digital detox in the hands of nature with warm weather and overnight sailing. We will practice Celestial navigation and find our way across this vast ocean using only the sun, the stars, our map and a sextant!

You need no prior sailing experience and the crew will teach you all you need to know about handling a Cornish Lugger on the high seas. You will be part of the night watches and learn how to keep a look out, navigate, steer, hoist sails, take reefs and make knots. All while enjoying the wasteness and beauty of nature.

We will first visit and explore Cape Verde before head out on the long Atlantic crossing. Our final destination is Tobago with its’ beautiful tropical landscapes, sapphire waters and deserted white sand beaches.

This passage from Canary Islands to Capo Verde will take us about 4-5 days. We might celebrate New Years on the ocean or just as we reach Cape Verde! Either way it will be unforgettable! About 600 Nm due West from Senegal we will find this pristine group of Islands. It’s fascinating archipelago is best experienced onboard a sailing vessel like Grayhound. Tropical landscapes, un-spoilt beaches, volcanic hill sides, banana plantations and deep blue ocean water with coral reefs. Home to sea turtles, hump back whales, fly-fish, and tuna.

We will set out from Cape Verde and head west. As the trade winds fill our sails, we prepare for many days at sea without connection to land and civilization. Our aim is to cross by Celestial Navigation, using only the sun, stars and the sextant. We will be surrounded by endless ocean for at least two weeks watching the winds fill our sails and the stars and the moon light up the waves. We will keep a good look out for whales, turtles, dolphins, flying fish, and ocean birds like the tiny Petrel and the massive Albatross. You will feel the stress of normal life quickly slip away and be replaced by the immensity of nature and the friendly atmosphere onboard.

After some 2200 Nm as we draw closer to Tobago our minds will be filled with memories and our hearts with humbleness from nature. Once we have cleared customs in Scarborough we will head back around the island to the Bay of Castara and drop anchor. This hidden gem of Tobago is our final destination. We suggest that you book a room in one of the wonderful bungalow apartments in this little sleepy fishing village well in advance and spend some days or a week exploring Tobago. It is a wonderful island with amazing nature, deserted white sand beaches, tropical rain forest and lovely and friendly locals
