Voyage No. 1444
What do a classic 1916 yacht and a 1776 lugger have in common?
Not much at first glance but if you take a closer look you will see that there are quite a few similarities: they are both representatives of ships of old, built to navigate the seas safely and quickly with guests. They share the homeport of Douarnenez and the magnificent coast line of Finistère. They sail with the aim of giving people an unforgettable experience while learning to handle these ships. The two experienced crews are eager to create a race/cruise between these two magnificent ships for the first time, while enjoying the beautiful coastal waters of Iles des Ponant Bretagne. At the end, it will be up to you, as a sailing guest, to discover their differences and similarities, because during this trip you will have the opportunity to sail on both ships.
This unique and ‘once in a life time’ voyage enables our guests to sail aboard classic yacht SKEAF as well as on the lugger Grayhound. The three-day sail trip, departing from Douarnenez, will be a fun, competitive, and friendly cruise during which we will test the strengths and sailing styles of the two ships, while enjoying nature and the practice art of classic sailing. You will have the chance to sail on both ships, and thus be able to compare them. In addition, it is not often that we have the chance to see “our own” boat sailing nearby!
There is no shortage of beautiful coastal navigation areas in Finistère. During this navigation, we will focus on the area around the Ponant Islands. Ouessant, Sein and the famous Raz de Sein, the Molène archipelago, the coves and hidden caves of the bay of Douarnenez, Camaret, Aber Wrach … Have you dreamed of passing between the Tas de Pois, as seen on the amazing photos of classic ships racing between the Brest and Douarnenez festivals? The crews will go out of their way to offer the program that best suits your needs and the weather! Geraldine, the captain of the Skeaf, knows the area by heart!
After an exciting day of navigation, embellished with theory for those who wish, the two ships will meet in a port or at anchorage. We will set the tables in the saloons and enjoy a well-deserved meal with fresh local food. We will offer a glass of local wine or two, or if you prefer a bottle of our own beers. The discussions of what ship won the days sail will last until sunset for sure …
If you sign up for this sail make sure to set time aside to visit the charming town of Douarnenez. This wonderful little fishing town has three harbours and plenty of old classic sailships as well as a very nice Maritime Museum. Take time for a wonderful meal in one of the local Créperies as well as a visit to some of the nice artisanal shops.
